Tails 1997/98
I photograph what I see outdoors on my walks around the city. For several years I have photographed children’s sidewalk coin-operated rides. These “kiddie rides” command my attention with their lurid colors and clumsy grotesque faces. Recently I have photographed them from new angles that describe a more sexual interpretation and find that they offer bold abstract forms. There is a feeling of decay and entropy in their subtle eroticism that draws you in and repels you at the same time.
The struggle between the innocence of childhood and its inevitable loss through knowledge of sexuality seems to be at play in these toys. The seduction of innocence and its decay captivates my attention.
